ROANOKE, Va.—We are less than two months away from the 23rd annual Commonwealth Games and Thursday, Virginia Amateur Sports made a few announcements about this year's games.
Subway was introduced as the new primary sponsor, and once again the event is also drawing big names for the Olympic style sports festival that takes place July 21st through the 23rd.
"I think it's just going to make a huge impact on the participation at opening ceremonies," said Pete Lampman, president of Virginia Amateur Sports. "We've tried various other sundries of things to try to get more people from the valley to come to opening ceremonies and cheer the athletes on as they come in just like the Olympics, and I think having the Washington Redskins and an Olympic speaker is going to make a big difference of participation from the valley in coming to opening ceremonies. I really do."
Two new sports have been added to this year's games, flag football and boys lacrosse.
They're now up to a total of 55 sports.
