What do NFL players do during a lockout? For one Pro Bowl Wide Receiver and Dancing with the Stars alum, you try out for a soccer team. Chad Ochocinco is taking his talents from Cincinnati's football field...to Kansas City's football pitch.
"Due to the NFL lockout, I'm excited to be able to follow my childhood dream of playing for a Major League Soccer team," Ochocinco said. "Thanks to Sporting Kansas City for giving me this opportunity."
Sporting Kansas City invited Ochocinco to tryout in Kansas City next week. After the four-day trial tryout starting Tuesday, the team would then decide whether or not to extend the trial period.
The tryouts will not be open to the public, the team said on Thursday.
"We're always searching for players who can help our team and bringing in new talent," Sporting Kansas City Manager Peter Vermes said. "We know that Chad is an exceptional athlete and that he loves the sport of soccer, and he did play a lot when he was younger. We're excited to see how his skills will translate once he arrives next week and begins training with our team."
In a FOX Soccer appearance, Ochocinco talked about his well-documented history with soccer.
"Soccer was always my first sport. That was my first love. Started from four years old and once I got to high school, I had to make a decision on what I wanted to focus on and take me to the next level."
Ochocinco is under contract with the Cincinnati Bengals through the 2011 NFL season and has been invited to the Pro Bowl six times. The NFL is currently in a lockout while the players union and team owners negotiate a new collective bargaining agreement.
