LOCAL AYSO PARTICIPATION SKYROCKETS

Region 88 of the American Youth Soccer Organization, serving Glendale and La Crescenta, registered a record 3,745 players for the 2011 soccer season this fall, according to Region 88 officials. Officials said 329 teams play on Saturdays and Sundays at parks and schools across Glendale.

Commissioner Aldo Mascheroni said in a press release that there was growth among a number of both boys' and girls' teams.

Although officials estimate that more than 70% of the athletes are from Glendale and La Crescenta, the program's success, along with its open-registration policy, attracts players from the surrounding communities of La Cañada Flintridge, Burbank, Sunland, Eagle Rock and Atwater Village.
