St. Louis will face the Texas Rangers in the World Series, beginning Wednesday in St. Louis.


Seven area high school teams remained ranked by CIF after the CIF Southern Section office unveiled its latest polls Monday. All remain in the same spots they occupied last week.

St. Francis' football team remains ranked third in the Western Division. The Golden Knights (6-0) will meet host Gardena Serra, ranked fourth in the division, in a Mission League game at 7 p.m. Friday.

In boys' cross-country, Flintridge Prep is ranked No. 3 in Division V. In girls' cross-country, Crescenta Valley is No. 6 in Division I, Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy is No. 5 in Division IV and Flintridge Prep holds the sixth spot in Division V.

The Glendale and Hoover boys' water polo teams are ranked seventh and ninth, respectively, in Division V.


Region 88 of the American Youth Soccer Organization, serving Glendale and La Crescenta, registered a record 3,745 players for the 2011 soccer season this fall, according to Region 88 officials. Officials said 329 teams play on Saturdays and Sundays at parks and schools across Glendale.

Commissioner Aldo Mascheroni said in a press release that there was growth among a number of both boys' and girls' teams.

Although officials estimate that more than 70% of the athletes are from Glendale and La Crescenta, the program's success, along with its open-registration policy, attracts players from the surrounding communities of La Cañada Flintridge, Burbank, Sunland, Eagle Rock and Atwater Village.


The Glendale YMCA Quarterback Club will hold its sixth meeting of the year at 11:30 a.m. today at The Elk's Lodge, 120 E. Colorado St., Glendale.

The club, which is in its 69th year, is geared to support the Crescenta Valley, Glendale, Hoover, St. Francis and Village Christian high football teams and the Glendale Community College football program.

Former UCLA quarterback Cory Paus will be the guest speaker at today's meeting.
