INF Christian Colon, who has not played since fracturing his right middle finger Sept. 2, was placed on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to Sept. 7. He finishes the season hitting .302/.348/.442 with no homers and four RBIs in 20 games.
RF Nori Aoki became the first Royal to collect 11 hits in a three-game series. He went 11-for-13 vs. the White Sox. Hall of Famer George Brett (vs. the White Sox in 1982) and Willie Wilson (vs. the Yankees in 1980) had held the club record of 10. Aoki also walked twice in the series. The last player to reach base 13 times in a three-game series was Kevin Kouzmanoff (2009 with the San Diego Padres).
Royals rookie since RHP Tom Gordon set the franchise record with 17 in 1989. Ventura's 21 quality starts are a Royals rookie record; Bob Johnson had 20 in 1970.
LHP Jason Vargas, who starts the series opener Friday against the first-place Tigers, is 3-3 with a 4.86 ERA in nine career starts against Detroit. He is 1-2 in four starts against them this season, including a loss on Sept. 9 at Comerica Park in which he gave up four runs on six hits and three walks in 5 1/3 innings.
SS Alcides Escobar homered in the fourth. It was his first home run since May 11 at Seattle -- a span of 409 at-bats. Escobar has 18 hits off White Sox LHP Chris Sale -- the most by any hitter.
