INF Christian Walker had his contract purchased Wednesday from Triple-A Norfolk. Baltimore was able to add him to the 40-man roster because Chris Davis is serving a 25-game suspension. Walker, 23, was named the 2014 Brooks Robinson Minor League Player of the Year. He hit a combined .288 with 53 extra-base hits, 96 RBIs and 73 runs in 139 games with Double-A Bowie and Triple-A Norfolk. He also led all Orioles minor leaguers in home runs (26) and RBI (96). He started at first base against Toronto and got his first major league hit with a double in the seventh inning. "If we think a guy can impact us in the future, it helps us to make a better evaluation in the offseason of when someone might be able to help us," manager Buck Showalter said. "Now if he goes 0-for-30 up here, that doesn't mean the door will close."
3B Manny Machado will stay in Los Angeles for at least another week to rehab his surgically repaired right knee. Machado is then expected to rejoin the Orioles on Sept. 29. The hope is he will be ready for spring training.
Nick Markakis got the night off Wednesday against the Blue Jays after getting hit by a pitch the previous night. Markakis missed the entire 2012 postseason when he was hit by Yankees pitcher CC Sabathia. "We worked hard all season long to get where we are now," Markakis said of the Orioles winning the AL East. "We got one step out of the way. Now we have a couple more steps to go."
RHP Ubaldo Jimenez, who signed a four-year, $50 million deal in the offseason but lost his spot in the rotation, found some redemption by helping the Orioles win the AL East with a solid performance Tuesday against the Blue Jays. He allowed two runs on two hits and four walks over five innings. Manager Buck Showalter was tempted to pull Jimenez after the fourth, but the pitcher convinced him otherwise. "I made the mistake of looking in his eyes," Showalter said. "It was pleading. ... I think he deserved it. He was right." Showalter said Jimenez could get another start this season. He is 5-9 with a 4.90 ERA in 23 games, including 21 starts.
