Coach Billy Donovan's task to replace point guard Erving Walker just got tougher.

On the eve of the No. 10 Gators' season opener against Georgetown aboard the USS Bataan, near Jacksonville, Donovan told a media gathering he had suspended junior Scottie Wilbekin indefinitely.

The longtime Gators coach did not discuss the reasons for the decision, but said Wilbekin did not do anything against the law or NCAA rule, according to the Associated Press.

Donovan said he learned Thursday that Wilbekin "made some choices and did some things" that led Donovan to leave him in Gainesville.

"How long it lasts, I don’t know,” Donovan said of the suspension, per AP. “But right now, I felt like he didn’t need to be here or playing in this game.

"He could have played, but because of my team being aware of it and me being aware of it ... I made the decision. I think it was right for Scottie and right for our team.”

This season Wilbekin was expected to replace Walker. a three-year starter and the school's all-time leader in assists and minutes played. While Walker was a star, Wilbekin is a proven defender with 58 career steals and a reliable decision-maker.

Wilbekin averaged 2.6 points and 1.6 assists for last season's Elite Eight team.

Senior shooting guard Kenny Boynton now will start at point guard against Georgetown when the teams meet at 9 p.m. Friday in the Navy/Marine Corps Classic. At just 6-foot-2, Boynton had hoped to improve his NBA stock with some time this season at the point, but Donovan now is left with no choice.

Senior Mike Rosario likely will move from small forward to replace Boynton, while junior reserve forward Will Yeguete would fill out the starting five.

"He’s very, very remorseful,” Donovan said of Wilbekin. “He feels very, very bad. Internally, really, really hurt by it. Took responsibility, accepted being accountable. I think he understands."

Junior wing Casey Prather also will miss the game after he sustained his sustained his second concussion in nine days earlier in the week.

"This throws a wrench (into things)," Donovan said.
