Looking back: Thayer leads Merchants past Boyne City
Orlando Thayer threw a four-hitter as the Harbor Springs Merchants picked up a win over Boyne City, 7-2, in a Petoskey Softball League contest.
— Jerry Cooper tied a Petoskey-Bay View Country Club record, carding a 31-31— 62 round.
Cooper’s foursome included Bob Wallace, Jim Behan and Bob Mogg.
Mogg was also a member of the low 62 club.
The Petoskey News-Review Tigers upended the Lion Cubs, 3-1, to win the Petoskey Little League Major Division league title.
The Tigers were comprised of Bill Keiser, Pat Robbins, Doug McKenzie, Tom Bellmer, Mike Robbins, Phil Giles, Steve Mindel, John Giles, Fred Gorman, Joe Bellmer, Jeff McKenzie, Dave Burek, Jim Cosens, Dave Speigl, and Mark Neill.
Coaches were Bud Neill, John Cosens and Dick Harbaugh.
Clark Hewitt, a Petoskey High School graduate, returned from the South Pacific where he and others involved in Athletes In Action played several baseball games against local island teams.
“It was great,” Hewitt said. “One of the best athletic experiences of my life.”
Hewitt, a Taylor (Ind.) University student-athlete, hit .325 with one home run while playing 13 games as the team’s catcher and two in the outfield.
The team finished the trip 13-2.
Athletes In Action used the baseball games as mission opportuities.
— The Petoskey American Legion baseball team finished the sixth annual Spartan Classic in East Lansing with a 2-2 record.
Mike Sobleski allowed six hits and two runs during a 6-2 win over Marquette. At the plate in the same game, Sobleski added two hits.
Paul Andoni had two hits including a double and Pete Spielies added one home run for Petoskey during a 8-6 win over Stevensville.
