College notes: Aquinas College's Loper helps Saints earn doubleheader sweep
Loper, a 2008 Petoskey graduate, has thrown six and two-third innings spanning four appearances this season and has allowed seven hits and five earned runs while striking out two and walking four.
— Freshman infielder Hunter Stinger had one hit in three at bats and scored a run for Concordia University during a Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference doubleheader loss to Aquinas College, 8-1.
Stinger, a 2012 Petoskey grad, has appeared in 10 games including two as a starter and has four hits including a triple in 10 at bats and has scored four runs this season for the Cardinals.
— Freshmen relief pitcher Scott Morse tossed two-thirds of inning and allowed one hit and one walk for Concordia during a 9-7 loss to Aquinas.
Morse, a 2012 Harbor Springs grad, is 1-1 on the season out of the bullpen. Morse has thrown seven and two-third innings spanning eight appearences, allowing one run on eight hits while striking out four and walking three.
Concordia is 4-19 overall, 3-9 league.
— Rachel Gutowski, a 2010 Petoskey grad, set a Wilmington (Ohio) College school-record by scoring seven goals for women’s lacrosse team during a non-league loss, 20-11, to Trine (Ind.).
Gutowski has scored 13 goals and has added two assists this season to lead the Quakers.
Wilmington is 0-7 overall.
— Grand Valley State University women’s tennis No. 6 singles player Kali Phillips defeated West Liberty (WV) University’s Stephanie Howells, 6-0, 6-0, during a non-league match.
Phillips, a 2011 Petoskey grad, added a No. 5 singles and No. 3 doubles win later in the week against Indiana University of Pennsylvania.
Phillips is 23-1 overall, including a 19-match winning streak and is 21-0 in dual matches while recording a 9-3 record with four doubles partners this season for the Lakers.
GVSU is 22-5 overall, 12-2 in conference.
— Annie Dipert, a 2012 Charlevoix grad, placed fifth as she finished the 10,000 meter run in 39 minutes, 43.25 seconds for the North Central (Ill.) College women’s outdoor track & field team during the First Chance Invitational.
The Cardinal team won its first of the season outdoor event over College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin rivals, Wheaton (Ill.) and Carthage (Wisc.) with five first-place finishes.
— Senior pitcher Andi Gasco earned her seventh win of the season allowing two earned runs on four hits while striking out seven, then added a solo home run during a 5-2 non-league win for Trine (Ind.) University over DePauw (Ind.).
Gasco, a Petoskey grad, then added her second home run of the day — her ninth of the season — to help the Thunder to a 8-0 win. Carly Searles, a 2011 Petoskey grad, combined for four hits in six trips to the plate including one home run, three RBI, scored two runs and stole three bases.
Trine is ranked No. 5 in Division III, 15-1 overall.
— Junior pitcher Kevin Thompson threw two and two-thirds innings allowing no runs on one hit while striking out two and without issuing a walk for Alma College during a 17-0 MIAA loss to Adrian College.
Thompson, a Petoskey grad, is 1-0 on the season, appearing in two games including one as a starter spanning nine and one-third innings. Thompson has allowed no earned runs on four hits while striking out seven and walking four for the Scots. Kolbi Schumaker, a 2011 Boyne City grad, drew a walk for Alma during the same game.
Alma was swept by Adrian twice during the week and stands at 4-9 overall, 0-4 in league.
— Steven Kolb, a 2009 Inland Lakes grad, combined for four hits and scored a run for Spring Arbor University during a Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference doubleheader sweep of Marion (Ind.) University, 3-1 and 2-0.
Kolb is hitting .300 with 10 hits, five walks, two RBI and has scored four runs for the Cougars this season.
Spring Arbor is 8-9 overall, 4-0 in the WHAC.
— Hope College No. 2 singles player Jason Muller defeated Alma College’s Logan Beard, 6-2, 7-6, during a MIAA season-opening match.
The Dutchman won the match, 8-1, over the Scots. Muller, a 2009 Petoskey grad, and partner Parker Bussies also won a doubles match, 8-0.
Hope is 9-2 overall, 1-0 in the league.
