CROSS YOUR FINGERS: Keys to the season
Resolve the QB situation: Blaine Gabbert is the starter, even though he’s injured right now. If he can’t perform to the level expected, it’s time to move to Plan B, whatever that might be.
Protect the QB: Speaking of quarterbacks, regardless of who is making the calls, the Jags need to protect their QB or he will never be able to be effective.
Open holes: The Jags addressed their offensive line in the draft, selecting Luke Joeckel with the No. 2 overall pick. He is expected to be a cornerstone at right tackle, opening holes for Jones-Drew and protecting Gabbert – for however long Gabbert is the starter.
LUCK OF THE DRAW: Key games
1. Sept. 15 at Oakland. Game could ultimately decide No. 1 draft pick, likely star defender Jadeveon Clowney.
2. Jags face Seattle, Denver and San Francisco on road in first half, facing Niners in London.
3. Second half eases up, with 3 of last 4 games at home.
THE LUCKY ONES: Players to watch this season
The Buzz: Entering his third season, has a total of 21 TDs and 17 picks. He’s on a short leash, though it’s not all his fault. Aaron Rodgers would struggle lining up with this crew. Gabbert and Henne were sacked 50 times – third- most in the league – behind a leaky offensive line.
Position: Running back
The Buzz: Recovering from a serious foot injury, MJD needs to show the form he delivered in winning the 2011 rushing title.
Position: Wide receiver
The Buzz: He has skills to be a star, but his substance issues have put his career in jeopardy.
Position: Offensive tackle
The Buzz: The Jags are hoping that Joeckel can provide the stability Tony Boselli did in the franchise’s heydays.
The Buzz: He remains the heart of the Jacksonville Jaguars defense.
