Jerry likes to tell young people how he got into sports writing as an inspirational tool they can use in reaching their own dreams.
He was in Fort Pierce sometime in the previous century when his wife said on a Sunday morning over coffee: "That's it. We're broke. Get a job."
So he looked in the classified ads and found three options: (1) Pump gas; (2) Sell shoes; (3) Be the second man on the local newspaper's two-man sports department.
He picked the one that sounded like the easiest and the rest is history.
