Dooley officially hired away from Kansas

Update:

Kansas Head Coach Bill Self released a statement Wednesday afternoon regarding Coach Joe Dooley's departure from the KU basketball program.  Here are Self's comments:

From Kansas head coach Bill Self on Joe Dooley – “Joe accepted the head coaching position at Florida Gulf Coast this afternoon. He’s had several opportunities where he could of made a move but this one just felt the best for him and his family. We are obviously so excited for Joe, Tanya and Max. Joe has meant an awful lot to our program in the last 10 years and a big reason why we have been successful.

“Although we hate to see him leave, it’s one of those situations that you are so happy for him and know that he will be ultra-successful living on the beach in Florida. He’s been so instrumental in not only coaching our guys but also with the development and skill improvement of our players. All of our players have enjoyed playing for him, knowing they were going to get his best effort every day.”

Florida Gulf Coast has hired Joe Dooley as its new basketball coach.

The school announced Wednesday that they've hired the former Kansas assistant.

Dooley replaces Andy Enfield, who left earlier this month to take a head coaching job at Southern California. Under Enfield, FGCU became the first No. 15 seed to reach the round of 16 in the NCAA tournament. The Eagles upset Georgetown and San Diego State before losing to Florida.

Dooley has spent the last 10 seasons as an assistant on Bill Self's staff at Kansas. In that time, the Jayhawks produced 300 wins, nine straight Big 12 regular season titles and six Big 12 tournament championships. They've reached the round of 16 six times, five regional finals and two Final Fours. They won the tournament in 2008.
