With cold weather conditions and temperatures hovering around 35 degrees and a wind chill of 28 degrees, the Wichita State Shockers and Oklahoma State Cowboys went back-and-forth for 12 innings before the Cowboys escaped with a 6-5 extra inning win. Tyler Baker led the Shockers offensively going 2-for-4 with three RBI and a triple.
The Shockers scored first after Micah Green doubled with one out in the second and scored on Tyler Baker’s two out RBI single that gave Wichita State the early 1-0 lead.
Oklahoma State took a 3-1 lead in the third inning that was highlighted by a Tanner Krietemeier RBI triple that landed just out of the reach of a diving Tanner Dearman. Corey Hassel singled to lead off the inning and scored on a RBI double from Saulyer Saxon. Saxon scored on Krietemeier’s triple and the Cowboys took advantage of a Shocker throwing error that allowed Krietemeier to cross the plate for the third run of the inning.
The Cowboys added to their 3-1 lead in the fourth inning after Victor Romero scored on a RBI single from Donnie Walton for a 4-1 advantage.
Wichita State got a run back to cut into the three run lead in the fifth when Baker led off the inning with a walk and moved over to second on a Dearman single. Garrett Bayliff singled to first base that brought home Baker to make the score 4-2.
In the sixth inning, Casey Gillaspie walked and Johnny Coy singled before Baker tripled to right field that scored Gillaspie and Coy to tie the game 4-4. Baker scored on a wild pitch and the Shockers regained the lead 5-4.
Krietemeier walked for the Cowboys in the eighth inning and advanced to second on a passed ball before Zach Fish beat out a ground ball to shortstop that let Krietemeier be aggressive on the bases and slide into home safely to tie the game 5-5.
In the 12th, it was Krietemeier and Fish again that provided the winning run for Oklahoma State. Krietemeier singled and stole second before Fish doubled to center field for the game winning hit.
The Shockers will be back on the field tomorrow, April 24 at Eck Stadium when they take on Oral Roberts at 6:30 p.m.
