The Kansas City Royals made a move before the trade deadline, but not the one many expected.
Astros outfielder Justin Maxwell was traded to the Royals in exchange for minor league pitcher Kyle Smith. Smith was 5-4 this season with a 2.85 ERA for Class A Wilmington.
Maxwell, 29, was batting .241 in 40 games for the Astros this season with 10 doubles, 2 triples, 21 runs scored and 2 home runs.
Maxwell was a fourth-round selection in the 2005 draft by the Nationals after playing at the University of Maryland.
Smith was a fourth-round pick by the Royals in 2011.
The Royals were rumored to be looking for a second baseman, and also rumored to be willing to trade RHP Ervin Santana, but only for the right situation. With the deadline passing, Santana will finish the season in KC before he becomes a free agent.
