The third place game in the NJCAA Tournament went down to the wire. After trailing by a few buckets for most of the game Hutchinson was able to defeat Gulf Coast State 63-61.
"Our kids showed a lot of toughness," head coach John Onitjes said. "We fought from behind the whole time. It was a great win for our ball club. We had a great season."
This was just one day after the Lady Dragons lost in the semi-finals to Trinity Valley.
With under a minute left the game was tied. Hutchinson's Chrisstasia Walter hit a jumper to give them the 2-point advantage.
Gulf Coast State had the answer with a basket of their own, but with 18 seconds left on the clock Aha Sorrells dribbled the ball down the court to score. From there, the defense needed to step it.
"You just have to believe your team is the better defensive team," freshman Jamie Patrick said.
Tthe Lady Dragons were able to keep the Lady Commodores from scoring.
Jasmine Patterson led Hutchinson in scoring with 14 points. It was a team affair, however, as three other players were in the double digits. Jamie Patrick had 12 points and Chrisstasia Walter and Je'Von'Ta Hill each had 11.
"We pulled it off as a team," Patrick said. "That's what you got to do, be a team."
The team was also 13 of 16 from the free throw line.
Necole Sterlin lead the Lady Commodores with 16.
