The big Swede won the Tour Championship and in doing so, took home the $10M prize by winning the Fedex Cup Playoffs. He began the playoff in 9th place and after a win at the Deutsche Bank vaulted him upward and he dominated the the final event in Atlanta to win the whole she-bang.
I say he was unlikely because Stenson was largely unheard from this season. In April he began to play well and slowly but surely made his way up the Fedex Cup standings. Second place at the US Open, T2 at the Bridgestone, third at the PGA Championship and then the W at Deutsche Bank. He played well on the European Tour (where points count, who knew?!) and kicked it into high gear for the playoffs.
Tiger held the top spot coming into the four event run but admitted he ran out of gas at the end. T65, T11 and T22 after a second place finish at the Barclays. He played so well, but not well down the stretch. So it goes in this new format of the PGA Tour.
The system needs some tweeking but overall, I think it works. Remember, this is a playoff format. Just because you had five wins in a season doesn't mean (in this format) you'll win the title. Remember when the Giants beat the undefeated Pats? Remember when the Giants did it again? Survive and advance. In the format of the playoffs, that's how it works now.
But you can't forget or ignore the regular season. If you don't have the regular season, then how do you get to the finals? Who did have the best season on the PGA Tour? Tiger Woods won five times and had eight top-10 finishes. Adam Scott won twice and one of those was a major. Phil Mickelson did the same as Scott. Jordan Spieth began the season with absolutely zero status on Tour and walked off with his first win and a President's Cup Team honor.
For me, Scott wins. I know Tiger won five times on Tour - three more than anyone else - but he failed to win a major. Winning a major counts as, like, two wins. Scott is a Masters' champion and a deserved one. Then he goes and nearly wins the British Open and plays well at the PGA. For me, Adam Scott had the best season. And he finished third in the Fedex Cup standings, so there.
President's Cup is next week and then some fall tournaments. And I know it's still warm outside but golf season is over. Thankfully, football season has always been here to save us.
