The 40th installment of one of Anchorage's premier footraces will have a different look. The Mayor's Marathon will finish at the Delaney Park Strip this year, rather than West High School. The move was made to give the finish area a more centric, spacious look.
“I’m excited about the 40th year,” said UAA Track and Field Coach Friess in a press release. “The Park Strip has been home to a lot of memorable, iconic events in this city’s history, so I think it’s fitting to have the finish there.” Friess and other members of the UAA athletic department put on the race annually.
Re-routing the race also eliminates the famous ( some say infamous ) "Heartbreak Hill" from the course. In years past, runners ascended a steep hill in the final couple of hundred yards leading up to West High School.
The 2013 Mayor's Marathon will be contested on Saturday, June 22nd. The event also includes a half-marathon and four mile event, replacing the 5.6 mile race.
