LOCAL BRIEFS: SOFTBALL
CALEXICO — The Calexico High softball team came from behind to beat Imperial High, 3-2, in an Imperial Valley League game here Tuesday.
Calexico (16-5, 5-2 IVL) will travel to play Holtville High on Friday at 6:30 p.m., while Imperial (14-10, 5-2 IVL) will host Central Union High on the same day, at the same time.
Eagles soar above Vikings
The Southwest High softball club overwhelmed Holtville High, 10-0, in an Imperial Valley League game on Tuesday in El Centro.
Kaitlin Williams led the way offensively for the home team, accruing three hits and an RBI. Evalyn Cota and Cheyenne Robinson each had two hits and an RBI, while Mackenzie Fannin, Maci Lerno and Taylor Ross all had one hit and one RBI apiece.
Southwest (3-4 IVL) will take on Scripps Ranch High on Saturday, Apr. 27, at 2 p.m. in San Diego. Holtville (0-7 IVL) hosts Calexico (5-2 IVL) on Friday at 6:30.
Hornets swarm upon Julian
CALIPATRIA — The Calipatria High softball team routed Julian High, 10-1, in a Manzanita League game here Tuesday.
Pitcher Raena Bañaga gave up three hits in the win and struck out nine batters. She went 2 for 4 at the plate with an RBI and two runs scored. Lorena Ortiz went 3 for 4 with two singles, a triple and two RBIs. Adela Mendez was 3 for 4 with two singles, a double and an RBI. Sierra Gonzalez went 2 for 3 with a single, a double, two RBIs and two runs.
The Hornets (5-0 ML) will host Vincent Memorial Catholic High on Thursday, Apr. 25, at 3:30 p.m.
TRACK AND FIELD
Tigers roar by Redhawks
PINE VALLEY — The boys’ and girls’ Imperial High track and field team defeated Mountain Empire High here in a nonleague meet Tuesday, the boys by a score of 94-28 and the girls, 80-43.
For the boys, Jacob Espinoza won the 1,600-meter run with a time of 5 minutes, 25 seconds. Savon Lewis won the 110-meter high hurdles (20.14 seconds).
Irvin Campos won the 400m (57.92) and the 800m (2:26), Chris Carter won the 100m (11.4) and the 200m (24.10), Joash Espina won the 300m hurdles (50.59), Alec Ritana won the triple jump (37 feet, 2 inches), Sebastian Santos won the shot put (46’7 ½”) and the discus throw (134’2”). The 4x400 relay team also won (4:07).
For the girls, Rebecca Aguilar won the 1,600m (6:23), Isabel Lopez won the 400m (1:10.86) and the triple jump (31’2 ½”).
Pearl Imperial won the 100m (12.38) and the 200m (28.38), Carla Quizada won the 800m (2:47), Khiya Mohammed won the shot put (38’5”), Olivia Moore won the discus (90’6”). The girls’ 4x400 relay team won (4:46).
