North Hagerstown’s Andrew Yacyk set the school record for career home runs in the Hubs’ 13-6 win over Clear Spring on Monday.
Yacyk’s homer in the seventh inning gave him 19 in his North career, one ahead of Randy Butts’ mark established from 1981-84.
Yacyk is now alone in third place in the MVAL career home run book after breaking a tie with Brunswick’s Scott Frye.
The Heights 16, St. Maria Goretti 11
POTOMAC, Md. — St. Maria Goretti closed its season with a loss to The Heights in the quarterfinals of the Metro Independent Lacrosse League.
Mike Ewing, Wyatt Derr, Matt Casto and Will Snyder each scored two goals for the Gaels (12-8). Jordan Patterson, Morgan Kenworthy and Graham Horst each scored once. Ewing had three assists, Derr had two and Casto, Snyder and Will Spinnler each had one.
Mike Fairley had 13 saves.
Saint James 11, Georgetown Day 6
WASHINGTON — Max Brady had three goals and Austin Fahey had two goals and an assist to lead Saint James past Georgetown Day School.
Leighton Younger and Connor Abeles each had two goals, Jake Thompson had a goal and an assist and Kyle Neale added one goal for the Saints.
Henry Meehan had 10 saves for Saint James.
Region XX tournament
Hagerstown Community College hosts the NJCAA Region XX Division I baseball tournament beginning Friday and the Hawks will kick off the tournament.
HCC will meet Chesapeake Community College in the opener at 10 a.m. If the Hawks win, they’ll wait until Saturday to play next. A loss would force HCC to play a second game Friday at 4 p.m. against the loser of Friday’s 1 p.m. game between top-seeded Potomac State and Harford Community College.
There will be two games Saturday and the championship round is scheduled for Sunday at 11 a.m.
Two Hawks named all-region
HCC infielder Eric Schanzenbacher and catcher Dylan Dunn were selected to the Region XX first team in balloting by coaches.
Infielder Tyler Walter, designated hitter Garrett Sprankle and pitcher Tanner Partlow all were named to the second team.
Schanzenbacher was also a first-team Maryland JuCo Conference selection, while Dunn was named to the second team.
Ewing named to all-region team
Hagerstown Community College catcher Kayla Ewing was selected to the Region XX first team in balloting by coaches.
Shayla Murray and Sarah Mullin were selected to the all-region second team. Ewing and Jenna Crunkleton also were selected to the Region XX all-tournament team.
Local runners shine
Washington County runners Wade Miller and Tony Clement had standout performances at big races over the weekend.
On Sunday at the Broad Street Run 10-miler in Philadelphia, Miller, 22, of Hagerstown, placed 11th in a field of roughly 38,000 in 50 minutes, 29 seconds.
On Saturday at the Apple Blossom 10K in Winchester, Va., Clement, 26, of Williamsport, finished 10th out of nearly 1,500 in 31:19.
