Smithsburg’s girls sure appeared on their way to victory when holding a 41-32 lead over North Hagerstown after three quarters.
“We just finally showed up and started playing defense in the fourth quarter,” North coach Cyndi Miller said. “During the first three quarters, we were lacking in defense. When we turned our defense up, we were able to get some steals and score some points in transition.”
Smithsburg coach Jimmy Powell put the blame on himself for going to stall tactics that failed to work.
“That was my fault,” Powell said. “We tried to hold the ball and it was a mistake. We tried to milk the clock and we made some turnovers. It was a bad decision on my part. We should have just continued to play the game, because we were doing well before we started to hold the ball.”
Guard Crystal McLeod finished with 20 points and five rebounds for North (6-9, 6-6). Forward Kayla Peterson posted a rare a triple-double with 19 points, 10 steals and 10 rebounds. Guard Shelly Trumpower added seven assists.
“Crystal is very quick,” Benjamin said. “She can get down the court in a hurry and get some uncontested layups. Kayla (Peterson) does a good job with the rebounding and making the outlet passes down the court.”
Center Beverly Kum finished with 20 points, 12 rebounds and two blocked shots for Smithsburg (5-9, 4-6). Elyse Koterwas scored 15 points and Kinsey Shifflett pulled down nine rebounds.
McLeod twice grabbed defensive rebounds and dribbled coast-to-coast for layups in a 1:07 span to pull the Hubs into a 41-41 tie with 3:21 remaining in the game.
Peterson sank 1 of 2 foul shots and made a basket before Trumpower added a bucket to complete a 14-0 run that gave North a 46-41 lead with 1:04 left.
Kum scored a basket for the Leopards to cut the lead to three with 26 seconds left, but McLeod made a pair of free throws with 13 seconds remaining to secure the Hubs’ win.
