Regional Digest: Rock Cats' Vasquez Pitches 7-Inning No-Hitter

Righthander Virgil Vasquez pitched a seven-inning no-hitter in the nightcap and Reynaldo Rodriguez hit three homers on the day as the Rock Cats defeated the Harrisburg Senators 5-1 and 9-0 on Saturday in an Eastern League doubleheader in New Britain. Vasquez (6-6) walked none and struck out two, throwing only 69 pitches in the first no-hitter at New Britain Stadium. Kevin Keyes reached on an error by shortstop Jorge Polanco leading off the second and was the Senators' only base runner. Rodriguez homered twice in the opener and drove in four runs; he has 19 homers this season. Polanco went 3-for-4 with three RBI in the second game.

Jacksonville Tops RCP

Jacksonville (Fla.) outscored RCP 7-4 in a wild 10th inning and won the American Legion World Series game 8-5 in Shelby, N.C.

RCP (Rocky Hill, Cromwell, Portland) fell to 0-2 in pool play and out of championship contention. It will play Midland (Mich.) on Sunday. Cole Ogorzalek pitched nine-plus innings for RCP, allowing five hits in the 10th and hitting a batter. RCP tried to rally in its half of the 10th, scoring on two bases-loaded walks and RBI singles by Alex Ramirez and Tommy Seaver but leaving three on base. Kyle Pausche went 4-for-5 with three RBI for Jacksonville. Kevin Radziewicz was 3-for-4 and Seaver 2-for-5 for RCP. ... Rob Janovic Jr. took the lead with 24 laps remaining and never trailed again in winning the 35-lap NASCAR Whelen All-American Series SK Modified feature at the Waterford Speedbowl. It was the first victory of the season for Janovic, of Waterford. Keith Rocco was second and Tim Jordan third. Bruce Thomas Jr. of Groton won for the third time this season in the 30-lap Late Model feature. Josh Galvin of Franklin picked up his 10th victory of 2014 in the 25-lap Street Stock feature. ... The UConn women's soccer team defeated Northeastern 2-0 in an exhibition in Storrs, getting goals from Samantha McGuire and Brittany Moreau. UConn opens the season Friday night in a home game against Hofstra. ... Chrissy Schoonmaker, an assistant at Houston last season, and Adrienne Clark, a volunteer assistant at Hofstra, were named assistants to UConn softball coach Jen McIntyre. ... Former UConn player Megan Silver Droesch was named interim women's volleyball coach at Eastern Connecticut. ... Eneas Freyre of Norwalk finished third in the Mount Washington Hillclimb 7.6-mile bike race in 54:11, and Tim Ahearn of Woodstock was sixth in a personal-best 55:48.
