The Edgewood Little League baseball team from Bristol won the U.S. East championship by edging Johnston, R.I., 2-1 in the final game at West Deptford, N.J., and will face West University Little League from Houston in the Senior League World Series on Sunday (5:30 p.m.) at Mansfield Stadium in Bangor, Maine. It will mark the first appearance for a Connecticut team of 14- to 16-year-olds in the event since 2002. ... They're not the only team enjoying Little League success in the state. Fairfield is a game away from the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pa. It has to get by Cumberland, R.I., on Saturday night in Bristol to make it happen. ESPN will carry that one at 7 p.m.

Kevin Durant bailed Thursday on Team USA, citing mental and physical fatigue, opening a spot filled Friday by former UConn player Rudy Gay. Durant said in statement released Friday by USA Basketball: "After going through training camp with USAB, I realized I could not fulfill my responsibilities to the team from both a time and energy standpoint." ....Pacers forward Paul George, who broke his leg during a U.S. team scrimmage last week in Las Vegas, has been promised a spot on the 2016 Olympic team, according to USA Basketball chairman Jerry Colangelo.

The Arizona Cardinals released linebacker Trevardo Williams, who was claimed off waivers last weekend. Williams was chosen by the Houston Texans in the fourth round of last year's draft and spent the season on injured reserve with a knee injury. He was waived by the Texans one week ago. He was a first-team All-Big East selection at defensive end in his senior season at Connecticut. ... Kiah Gillespie of Capitol Prep, the reigning state Gatorade player of the year in girls basketball who will be a senior in the fall, has committed to the University of Maryland.

A judge says she will render her verdict in the murder trial of Paralympic and Olympic athlete Oscar Pistorius on Sept. 11. He is accused of murdering his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp. ... Maryland will pay $31 million to the ACC, which ends their exit fee battle. The Terps will make that up quickly in the Big Ten. ... Rob Corcoran, a South Windsor graduate now living on Long Island, shot a 77 Friday and missed the cut at the PGA Championship. ... The Rangers agreed to terms with free agent Ryan Bourque, who had 21 goals for the Wolf Pack last season.
