Hartford Holds On To Defeat Saint Peter's In Home Opener

Hartford defeats Saint Peter's in home opener

WEST HARTFORD — The University of Hartford men's basketball team narrowly defeated Saint Peter's University 51-50 in its home opener at Chase Family Pavilion on Sunday.

Taylor Dyson led the Hawks (1-1), converting on all five of his three-point attempts to finish with 15 points.

In front of a home crowd of 1,876 fans, the game went down to the final possession. With 11 seconds remaining and Hartford leading by three at 51-48, Saint Peter's (0-2) called for a timeout with the ball at half-court. Quickly closing the gap to just one point on a dunk by Marvin Dominique, the Peacocks forced a turnover in the Hawks' backcourt, but were unable to get a three at the buzzer to fall.

Before the final possession, senior Mark Nwakamma, who scored just six points and saw limited minutes in both halves because of foul trouble, came away with the game-changing play that allowed the Hawks to build their three-point advantage heading into the final stretch. With Hartford leading by one at 49-48 with 39 seconds left, Dominique forced a Hawk turnover in the backcourt, but before he had a chance to put up the potential go-ahead points, Nwakamma came away with the steal and drew a foul.

The veteran forward went on to sink two free throws to give Hartford the three-point cushion it would need to hold on for the win.

Dominique finished with a game-best 19 points, pulling down 14 rebounds to record the Peacocks' first double-double of the season.
