In 2009 The Courant began honoring its choices as the top area high school male and female athletes of the year. The qualifications were simple: We looked for the best all-around athletes the 75 high schools in our primary circulation area could offer. We looked at the kids that participated in more than one season, in more than one sport. We also considered how dominant they were in their sports.

Over the years we've recognized a number of very talented young men and women, very worthy of the title Athlete Of The Year. The 2013-14 class is no different.

Among the many candidates considered, two stood out. We are proud to present Sarah Veilleux of RHAM High in Hebron and Zach Maxwell of Southington High as The Courant's male and female Athletes Of The Year for 2013-14.

Sarah was our All-Courant player of the year in both volleyball and basketball. She was part of state championship teams in volleyball and led the state in scoring in basketball, averaging more than 34 points per game in being named a Parade All-American. She is headed to St. Joseph's in Philadelphia, where she will continue playing basketball.

Zach was our football defensive player of the year in the falll. He also was a two-time Class LL and State Open wrestling champion and a two-time member of the All-Courant wrestling team. He's headed to the U.S. Military Academy Prep School in the fall with the intention of enrolling at West Point in 2015.

Congratulations to both!
