Ansonia (14-0), No. 3 in The Courant state ratings, defended its Class S championship and extended its winning streak to 28 games, dating back to last season.
Arkeel Newsome ran for 234 yards and three touchdowns to lead No. 1-seeded Chargers. No. 3 North Branford, absorbing its first loss, finished 12-1.
The prospect for a possible upset victory looked promising, 1:02 into the game for North Branford when Brandan Basil connected with Joe DeLucia on a 74-yard scoring pass.
But the Thunderbirds were silent the rest of the half; one which Ansonia dominated.
Ansonia led 14-6 after the first quarter on Newsome’s 3-yard TD run and Raeshaun Finney’s 75-yard scoring reception from Jaiquan McKnight.
Ansonia added two more TDs in the second quarter Andrew Matos’ 74-yard catch and his 9-yard run. Ansonia, which had 315 yards of total offense in the first half, led at the intermission 28-6.
Newsome’s final two TDs occurred in the final quarter on a 1-yard run and a 64-yard dash.
