DALLAS (AP)—Mike Modano is joining the Detroit Red Wings.
Modano confirmed his decision Tuesday in a text message to The Associated Press.
The 40-year-old forward played 20 seasons for the Minnesota-Dallas franchise and is the leading scorer among U.S.-born players in NHL history.
He is playing golf in Scotland and not returning to the United States until Thursday.
Modano said he was swayed by discussions with Brett Hull and other former and current Red Wings.
He will be introduced at a 2:30 p.m. press conference at Joe Louis Arena on Friday.
