Davenport Advances In NAIA Tournament

It wasn't easy, but, for Davenport, it's not over.

James Nelson scored a team-high 28 points leading the Davenport Panthers to an 85-81 win over William Penn(Iowa) in the first round of the NAIA Men's Basketball Tournament.

Lonnie Fairfax added 23 points along with a team-high seven rebounds. He also had eight assists and five steals.  Alan Douglas led William Penn with 36 points.

The Panthers overcame an early deficit to build a 28-18 lead with five minutes left to go in the first half only to have the Statesmen respond with a nine point run, eventually tying the game at 30-30. William Penn took the lead on a Keith Steffeck 3-point shot for a 33-30 advantage before the Panthers got a James Nelson basket in the closing moments to send it to intermission with William Penn leading 33-32.

With the game tied, 45-45, five minutes into the second half, the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference champion utilized a 10-0 to put themselves in the driver’s seat. William Penn made a charge to get to within three with 6:05 left in the game at 65-62, but the Panthers were able to keep the Statesmen at bay for the four-point win.

Davenport will play Indiana University Southeast tomorrow.
