BROOKLYN, Mich.—Wes Leonard was being remembered in a big way on Sunday afternoon.
The Fennville basketball who collapsed on the basketball court after making the game-winning shot in his team's season finale, was honored Sunday at Michigan International Speedway.
The "Wes Leonard Heart Team" - which included Wes's mother, Jocelyn, Father, Gary and brother Mitchell - were guests of honor at M.I.S. for the Nascar Sprint Cup race. Travis Kvapil, driver of the #38 Ford, sported the "Wes Leonard Heart Team" logo in two spots on the back panel of his race car. The heart team was formed to raise awareness about screening athletes for heart problems, and to raise money for heart defibrillators.
"You know it can happen to anybody and it happened to us and it is horrible and we need to be prepared for this," said Jocelyn Leonard, Wes's mother. "We're here to get the word out that it's time for these kids to have these monitors at sporting events and school to restart their heart."
"Travis and his team are right behind us because they know it could have been their kids."
The Leonard family prayed with Kvapil, his wife and team before today's race. Mitchell also had an up close tour of the pits and Kvapil's race car.
Kvapil's "Fellowship of Christian Athletes" sponsored car finished 31st in Sunday's race.
