• Group to include players from 1991-2011 seasons
  • Will feature players from 15 schools
  • Va. Tech's Ace Custis played in district

With 20 seasons of Bay Rivers District athletics in the hopper, we'll continue an exercise we started during football season and name the 20 best boys basketball players in district history. The plan is to gather opinions from fans and run the article come district tournament time in February.

Bay Rivers District play began with the 1990-91 school year, which featured several players likely to land in our the top 20. Northampton's Ace Custis went on to a fine career at Virginia Tech and Nansemond River's Derrick Bryant led Norfolk State deep into the NCAA Division II tournament.

Southampton's Percy Ellsworth was the district's top player that season and earned a spot on the University of Virginia's basketball roster for two seasons. But he's better known for his football career at U.Va. and the six seasons he spent in the NFL thereafter.

Now that we're started, we'll look to you Bay Rivers hoops fans to keep us moving. Feel free to offer your opinions by e-mail at mobrien@dailypress.com or to the comments section of the Inside the Bay Rivers District blog: hrvarsity.com/insidethebrd.

In addition to players from the 10 schools currently in the district, players from Nansemond River, Lakeland, Northampton, Southampton and Franklin will be considered. But we will only consider players from those 15 schools during the years they competed in the Bay Rivers District: 1990-present.

I know Terry Kirby and Chris Slade were great when they played at Tabb, but they will not be considered for the list because they did not play in the BRD.
