Virginia Tech and Tabb High alumnus Will Mulherin was the top men’s finisher and Williamsburg resident Jennifer Quarles was the top women’s finisher Saturday at the fifth annual Tabb May Day 5K.
Mulherin, a three-time ACC champion in the 5,000 meters and two-time NCAA All-American in cross country, ran a course-record time of 15 minutes, 42 seconds.
Quarles finished in 19:33, ahead of Newport News’ Mercedes Castillo-D’Amico (20:06) and Laura Craig of Yorktown (23:06).
Former major-league all-star Jair Jurrjens yielded just one run and struck out seven in 6 2/3 innings, leading Norfolk past the Toledo Mud Hens 2-1 before a Harbor Park season-high crowd of 9,045 as the Tides (14-9) began a homestand.
Russ Canzler’s RBI single and Yamaico Navarro’s homer provided Norfolk its runs.

The Richmond Flying Squirrels saw their losing streak reach three with a 4-2 loss to the New Britain Rock Cats in Connecticut. Josmil Pinto's three-run homer off Craig Westcott in the third inning proved decisive.
East Carolina product Mark Minicozzi batted 4-for-4 for the Squirrels, and Joe Panik was 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI.
Former Maine standout quarterback Warren Smith was 18-of-22 for 340 yards to help the Richmond Raiders defeat Columbus in the Pro Indoor Football League.
