Anthony Gill had 19 points and seven rebounds as Virginia survived a stiff challenge from Southern Methodist, winning 76-73 Friday night in the Corpus Christi Challenge in Texas.
The Cavaliers (6-1) will play for the championship at 9 p.m. Saturday against Missouri State, a 73-67 winner against Texas A&M.
Gill scored 12 points down the stretch to lead the Cavaliers to a seven-point lead with 5:05 remaining. But SMU responded on several baskets inside the lane, the last a Yanick Moreira layup from Markus Kennedy.
Moreira was fouled by Joe Harris on the play, then made a free throw to cut the lead to 74-73.
SMU's Keith Frazier stole the ball, but the Cavaliers' Akil Mitchell played defense well enough to prompt Moreira into a traveling violation with 2.0 seconds remaining.
Harris was fouled and made both ensuing free throws, and SMU's long inbounds pass went awry to end the game.
Both teams shot better than 45 percent from the floor, and Virginia was 71.4 percent (10 of 14) from beyond the arc. Evan Nolte was 3 of 4 from the 3-point area and finished with 12 points for the Cavs.
SMU, guided by longtime, well-traveled coach Larry Brown, was led by Nic Moore with 17 points.
