CATCH OF THE DAY: For the second day in a row, a defensive player showed off his hands. Rookie quarterback Tyrod Taylor's slant pass to rookie wide receiver LaQuan Williams on the goal line was tipped by rookie cornerback Talmadge Jackson and intercepted by linebacker Albert McClellan, who returned the takeaway to midfield.
PILING UP THE SACKS: Pass protection might be a theme stressed during offensive meetings. Unofficially, the defense combined for 17½ sacks of Flacco and Taylor. Outside linebacker Jarret Johnson led all players with three sacks. Defensive tackles Haloti Ngata and Arthur Jones and linebackers Paul Kruger and Josh Bynes each finished with two, and inside linebacker Ray Lewis posted 1½ sacks.
FORCING FUMBLES: The defense also collected a couple fumbles. Defensive tackle Cornell Banks sacked and stripped Taylor, and he recovered the loose ball. Rookie cornerback Chykie Brown popped the ball loose from Williams after he caught a pass, and Brown recovered the fumble.
NEW KICKER? Billy Cundiff did not attempt any field goals Wednesday. That duty went to punter Sam Koch, who went 4-of-5. He converted from 20, 41 and 34 yards (twice), and his only miss was from 34 when he banged the ball off the left upright.
INJURIES: Players who are on the physically-unable-to-perform list include wide receiver David Reed (wrist), offensive tackle Ramon Harewood (knees), defensive tackle Brandon McKinney (knee) and long snapper Morgan Cox (knee). Inside linebacker Jameel McClain (unspecified) and strong safety Tom Zbikowski (skin condition) are on the non-football injury/illness list. Players who did not practice include cornerbacks Danny Gorrer (left knee) and rookie Jimmy Smith (groin), center Matt Birk (left knee), wide receiver Hakeem Moore (unspecified) and defensive tackle Terron Sanders (unspecified). Wide receivers James Hardy (hamstring) and rookie Torrey Smith (hamstring), cornerback Domonique Foxworth (right knee) and rookie guard/center Justin Boren (unspecified) returned after missing Tuesday's session.
OVERHEARD: "We're killing him, Cam!" – Lewis to offensive coordinator Cam Cameron after Lewis knifed through the blockers to record a sack of Flacco on first-and-10 from the defense's 35.
NEXT DAY'S SCHEDULE: Thursday's session is scheduled to begin at 1:30 p.m. and could run as long as three hours. All practices are closed to the public.
