UM's Myers, O'Neill win titles at Wilkes Open
Five Maryland wrestlers won places on the podium Friday at the 80th annual Wilkes Open in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., led by individual championships for 285-pound Spencer Myers and 125-pound Paul O'Neill. In his first tournament of the season, Myers pinned Zachary Baker of Pittsburgh-Johnstown, Lex Knapp of Rutgers and Dan Garwood of Virginia Tech to reach the heavyweight final. In the championship, Myers defeated Virginia Tech's Ty Walz, 4-1. O'Neill won four matches Friday, including falls over Bloomsburg's Nick O'Donnell and Rutgers' Anthony Gianacola to begin the tournament. In the semifinals, O'Neill won a 4-2 decision over Pittsburgh-Johnstown's Evan Link before beating John Pellegrino of Nassau Community College, 9-5, in the championship bout. The Terps also received standout performances from Shyheim Brown and Shane Arechiga at 141 pounds and Chris Jastrzebski at 184 pounds. Brown finished third and Arechiga placed fifth, while Jastrzebski took fourth. All five Terps competed as unattached. Brown earned a technical fall over Tyler Chesney of Pittsburgh-Johnstown before falling to Princeton's Kevin Moylan by a narrow 4-3 margin. In the wrestleback, Brown won four consecutive matches including a technical fall and two major decisions. Brown defeated Pittsburgh-Johnstown's Dave Cawley, 15-2, in the third-place match.
