Miguel Gonzalez, who was scheduled to start Wednesday, will now start on Friday at Yankee Stadium in the series opener there. Gonzalez was 2-0 with a 2.63 ERA at Yankee Stadium in the regular season last year and threw seven innings of one-run ball in the Bronx for Game 3 of the AL Division Series.
Last season, Gonzalez was often given an extra day of rest down the stretch. Gonzalez said his left shin, which took a comebacker on Thursday, doesn't hurt but is still tender. He said that's not a factor in his being pushed back.
The move also allows Jake Arrieta and Chris Tillman to start the final two games of the Boston series on regular rest.
The Orioles have two off days over the next week — Tuesday in Boston and another on Monday after the team returns from New York — but the team will then play 20 games over the next 20 days, including an 11-game, 11-day road trip to the West Coast.
“We want to take the most advantage of the off days here,” Showalter said. “There's nothing physically we want to do yet, but we want to be proactive instead of reactive on it. When we get into these games shortly like we do here, we're going to have to [adjust]. If we want these guys to post up every five days like we need, we have to protect [them] when we can.”
Showalter said he hasn't yet thought about the option of a six-man rotation. He added he hopes to get back down to 12 pitchers as well.
Around the horn:
Reliever Luis Ayala rejoined the team and said he was available to pitch Monday after going to the hospital with what he said was an allergic reaction. … Right-hander Steve Johnson (strained lat) threw two innings (30 pitches) on Monday during a live batting practice session at extended spring training in Sarasota. … Catcher Matt Wieters threw out Shane Victorino attempting to steal second in the fourth, making five stolen-base throwouts by Orioles catchers in six attempts. Wieters is 4-for-5 and Taylor Teagarden is 1-for-1. … Nate McLouth, who led off the game with a single, has hit safely in all five of his starts this season.
