Jones making push as All-Star starter

Orioles center fielder Adam Jones is making a push to become a starter in theAll-Star game.

According to the most recent tally announced by Major League Baseball, Jones has moved from fifth to fourth among AL outfielders with 1,959,207 votes – that’s roughly 35,000 behind Toronto’s Jose Bautista, who has 1,996,940.

Texas’ Josh Hamilton (5,414,880) and New York’s Curtis Granderson (2,818,535) pace AL outfielders. The top three outfielders will start at the annual midsummer classic, which is July 10 in Kansas City.

Jones has played in every game this season and leads all Orioles’ qualifiers with 18 homers, 39 RBIs, a .311 average and a .360 on-base percentage.

Jones, who is now roughly 15,000 votes ahead of Texas’ Nelson Cruz in fourth, is angling to become the Orioles’ first All-Star starter since 2005, when second baseman Brian Roberts and shortstop Miguel Tejada both won their respective votes.

Catcher Matt Wieters (1,242,247) is third at his position behind Texas’ Mike Napoli and Minnesota’s Joe Mauer. Shortstop J.J. Hardy (968,963) is also third, trailing New York’s Derek Jeter and Texas’ Elvis Andrus.

Robert Andino is fifth at second base and Nick Markakis is 13th among outfielders. Major League Baseball announces its top five vote-getters at each position (15 for outfielders). In-stadium voting ends Friday; fans can continue to vote on-line, up to 25 times per email address, at until 11:59 p.m., Thursday, June 28.

Teams will be announced on July 1.
