At 19, he won <a class="taxInlineTagLink" id="EVSPR000062" title="Preakness Stakes" href="/topic/sports/horse-racing/preakness-stakes-EVSPR000062.topic">the Preakness</a> in 1983 aboard Deputed Testamony, a Maryland-bred long shot. It was the highlight of a storied career for Miller, of Jessup, who won 2,856 races aboard mounts totaling more than $37 million in earnings. He won seven jockey titles at <a class="taxInlineTagLink" id="PLREC00124" title="Laurel Park" href="/topic/sports/horse-racing/laurel-park-PLREC00124.topic">Laurel Park</a> and four at <a class="taxInlineTagLink" id="ORCUL000054" title="Pimlico Race Course" href="/topic/sports/horse-racing/pimlico-race-course-ORCUL000054.topic">Pimlico Race Course</a> after leading the country's apprentice riders in 1981.
