Veteran South Dakota State football coach and Selby native John Stiegelmeier signed 18 new recruits Wednesday, the first day of the national signing period.
“This has been the most intense recruiting year we’ve had in the sense of miles traveled, schools visited and official visits,” Stiegelmeier said.
The new Jackrabbits are from Minnesota (5), California (4), Arizona (3), Nebraska (3), Illinois (2), Iowa (2), South Dakota (2), and Florida (1). The South Dakotans are area standouts Herman Kleinsasser (5-10, 175 DB from Onida) and Nick Mears (5-11, 190 DB from Milbank). The other SDSU signees:

Augustana: The Vikings added 34 recruits from Minnesota (14), South Dakota (8), Iowa (5), Colorado (4), Nebraska (2) and Florida (1). South Dakotans include twins Jason and Justin Greenway of Mitchell and Sioux Falls O’Gorman running back Flynn Donelan. The Greenways are cousins to Minnesota Vikings linebacker Chad Greenway of Mount Vernon.
University of Sioux Falls:
The Cougars will enter their first season this fall as members of NCAA Division II and the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference with 33 recruits from South Dakota (9), California (6), Wisconsin (4), Minnesota (3), Missouri (2), Colorado (2), Arizona (1), Illinois (1), Kansas (1), Nebraska (1), Oregon (1) and France (1).
Recruits include sophomore defensive lineman Brock Sinclair of Gregory, a Northern State transfer.
University of South Dakota:
The Coyotes added 24 recruits from Iowa (6), Missouri (3), South Dakota (3), Oklahoma (3), California (2), Florida (2), Kansas (2), Nebraska (1), Wyoming (1) and Wisconsin (1).
Black Hills State: Among the BHSU recruits are 6-3, 200 Cole Hamlin of Highmore-Harrold, 6-3, 245 Jalen Lamb of Sully Buttes and 6-0, 205 Justin Jensen of Belle Fourche and a transfer from Presentation College. “Cole has been working hard in the weight room and is proving that he will help provide depth at our wide receiver position,” BHSU coach Jay Long said.
“Jalen is a second generation Yellow Jacket as his father (Joey) played at BHSU in the early 1980s.
He was an all-state football player for Charger Nation and can’t wait to prove himself on the field.”
South Dakota Mines:
Among the Mines’ recruits is 6-0, 175 hard nosed running back Brycen Nelson of Brookings.
Dakota State: The Trojans announced that 6-4, 210 defensive end Anthony Fischer of Sisseton transferred to DSU. “Anthony has already made big improvements and will continue to work toward earning a spot in our depth chart this spring,” said DSU coach Josh Anderson.
University of Mary:
Among Mary’s recruits is 6-3, 225 all-state wide receiver Joey Vrooman of Miller.
