MITCHELL -- The Aberdeen Central wrestling team got off to a slow start, but picked up speed as the meet progressed.
Despite some close, early losses, Aberdeen Central scored 134 points for third place on Saturday at the Eastern South Dakota Conference Individual Championships. Pierre, the defending State A champions, won the ESD with 211-1/2 points followed by Huron in second with 144 points.
“It started off not going our way, but we finished the day off really good,” said Central coach Rocky Burkett. “We were in fifth place most of the day and turned it on and finished well. It was good to see the guys come back after we lost some tough ones.”
Ten Golden Eagle wrestlers had 10 place-winners led by two champions and one runner up.
Griffin Hieb recorded three pins on his way to a title at 138 pounds. Hieb spent just 6 minutes 59 seconds total on the mat in his three matches. Mitchell Johnson took a different road to his individual title at 145 pounds. Johnson recorded three decisions, including two in overtime.
John Frisco received a bye to advance to the semifinal at 152 pounds, where he eased out a one-point win. Frisco lost in the title match 7-5 to Herman Katz of Huron.
The Golden Eagles were without the services of Seth Moore who was sick and Trevor Larson who was injured.
“I’m proud of the way we came back and fought through adversity. We lost some tough ones in the first couple of rounds. We want to get the momentum up for next weekend,” said Burkett.
Aberdeen Central will host the Region 3A tournament on Saturday beginning at 10 a.m. at Golden Eagles Arena. The region includes Pierre, Huron and Mitchell in addition to Aberdeen.
“It makes it easier,” said Burkett. “We don’t have to travel. Hopefully, we’ll get a good crowd there.”
