The Brown County Speedway had everything from photo finishes, to late race rallies and to a first time feature winner on Friday.
Levi Dinger of Houghton claimed the Super Stock feature, but just barely. Dinger had to fend off Shane Brick of Aberdeen to earn the feature win. The two battled each other through the entire 18-lap feature and finished the race side-by-side coming down the front stretch.
“That was great,” Dinger said after his first feature win of the season. “Brick really made it close at the end. He hung in there the whole time. He got me a little scared seeing him up there every lap.”
Dinger edged Brick by just .002 seconds to claim the win. Dinger wasn’t sure who had initially won the race.
“I had no clue,” Dinger said. “I knew it was close and it was up for grabs.”
The feature had only three caution flags and lasted just 10 minutes, but it was not the fastest feature of the night. That belonged to the Modified feature, which did not have a single caution flag and lasted only five minutes.
“Very fast,” Modified feature winner Mike Stearns said. “Very fast pace. It was unreal.”
The Hecla driver won his second Modified feature in as many weeks at BCS. He needed a little help this week. Aberdeen’s Kent Arment was leading for most of the 20 lap feature, but Stearns used some lap traffic to his advantage and passed Arment coming around turn number four with two laps to go.
“We definitely need lap traffic,” Stearns said. “Kent is pretty good when he gets out front and can hit his mark. Without lap traffic, we were a second place car.”
It was also the second feature win in as many nights for Stearns as he won a feature on Thursday night in Willmar, Minn.
“We are having a phenomenal season and hopefully we can keep her rolling,” Stearns said.
The last race of the night was another stellar finish. David McDonald of Huron won the Late Model feature. He had to fend off such racing giants as Arment, Curt Gelling of Aberdeen and Pat Weisgram of Aberdeen. Weisgram led early in the race and McDonald briefly took the lead midway through the feature. He then retook the lead from Weisgram with one lap to go in the 25-lap feature and hung on for the win.
“I couldn’t decide which side I wanted,” McDonald said. “I tried the top on the one restart and that didn’t feel right and that was worse when we got going because there wasn’t anything there. We just didn’t have enough drive to run the bottom. I just kept pounding that one lane and I was hoping there was somebody else down there leaving a little rubber for traction. The car finally came in at the end.”
Aberdeen’s Ethan Barton won his very first career feature on Friday in Pure Stock feature.
“We have had a good car so far this year and we have been looking for that win,” Barton said. “We have been close a couple of times, but we finally got it tonight.”
Barton was in second place behind Aberdeen’s Luis Chavez through the first three laps. Barton passed Chavez coming around turn number two on the fourth lap of the 12-lap feature. Barton led for the rest of the race.
“It was a good race,” Barton said. “(Chavez) is always tough to pass. He is a consistently good. I guess we just had the best car tonight.”
Chris Serr of Aberdeen claimed the Street Stock feature. Serr led from start to finish on his way to his first feature win of the season at BCS.
