I recently read where the most-bet-upon nonsporting event is the picking of the new pope.
That seems so wrong.
The cardinals of the Roman Catholic Church are meeting at the Vatican in prayerful consideration of who should succeed Pope Benedict XVI, the 265th pope. The traditions of picking a pope are very intriguing with the conclave, smoke and being sealed in the Sistine Chapel.
I saw a recent interview with Chicago's Cardinal Francis George, who said with a smile as he replied to a question about the favorites to become pope: “There is an old saying: Enter the favorite, leave a cardinal.”
I hope the cardinals never forsake some of their traditions in favor of new technology. Like using iPads to discuss who should be pope. Or vote via Twitter with the hashtag #popesRus. Or hold up their iPhones to show a picture of white or black smoke going up rather than using real smoke.
That would seem so very wrong.
But this is the time for me to make my predictions. I plan to predict everything in my way, including the new pope — I pick Cardinal Timothy Dolan of New York. Now, on to basketball predictions:
