State champ keeps throwing
University of South Dakota recruit and three-time state shot put champion Kyle McKelvey of Beresford will compete for Team USA at the 2011 Pan American Junior Athletics Championships in Miramar, Fla.
He will throw the shot put at 4 p.m. Sunday. The only other American male set to compete in the shot put is University of Georgia sophomore Caleb Whitener, who took second to McKelvey at the USA Junior Outdoor Track & Field Championships last month in Eugene, Ore.
Good works nominees
Several college football players with South Dakota connections area among the 132 nominees for the 2011 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team.
The award recognizes the selfless contributions to volunteerism and community service made by college football student-athletes across the nation. Nominees included Jake Steffen of South Dakota State, Anthony Muilenberg of Dakota Wesleyan, Coulter Boyer (Hurley) of North Dakota State, Andy Smith of South Dakota Mines, Braden Wieking of Sioux Falls, and Joe Bundy (Madison) of Wayne State.
SDSU football gears up
The Missouri Valley Football Conference will announce its pre-season poll and pre-season all-conference team Aug. 1. South Dakota State and North Dakota State are members.
Black Hills State included
The Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference's football media day is Aug. 1 in Colorado Springs. Despite not fully entering the conference until next season, Black Hills State will be part of the events.
Oldest S.D. road race
The 49th annual Jack 15 road race will start at 8:30 a.m. Sept. 24 in White with runners following a path to Brookings.
The 15.2-mile race, billed as South Dakota's oldest road race, costs $25 if registered before Aug. 31, and $30 after. There team events as well with varying prices.
The free kids' fun run will begin at 11 a.m. with registration starting at 10 a.m. at the South Dakota State campanile. Details: allsportcentral.com.
Faulkton hosts golf weekend
The Lakeside Country Club in Faulkton will host a classic golf weekend Saturday and Sunday. It kicks off with a Calcutta tournament with two-person teams at $50 per person which will feature nine holes on Saturday beginning at 10 a.m., a Calcutta auction Saturday at 9 p.m. and 18 holes on Sunday at 8 a.m.
A two-person tourney at $40 per person will be held with 18 holes on Saturday at approximately 1 p.m. The event concludes on Sunday with a two-person scramble at 1 p.m. The entry fee is $20 per person.
