INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Northern State finished fifth at the 33rd annual Midwest Classic on Monday.
The Wolves, who had a tournament-high seven wins by fall, placed four wrestlers amongst the top seven to earn 75 total points. Newberry College, which is ranked No. 1 in Division II, won the tournament with 117 points. The tournament features 25 teams from Divisions II, Division III and the NAIA from around the nation.
It was really nice to get a fifth-place finish, Northern State coach Pat Timm said. We definitely had some higher-ranked opponents from Division II, so I was pretty happy with how we came out in that tournament.
Matt Meuleners successfully defended his 2010 Midwest Classic crown in the 285-pound class. Meuleners, the second-ranked wrestler in the nation and returning national champion at the heavyweight division, defeated No. 4 Jake Elkins of tournament champion Newberry in the championship match by a final score of 5-2. Meuleners advanced to the title bout after surviving a 3-2 overtime round with sixth-ranked J.D. Ramsey of West Liberty.
Matt wrestled really well, Timm said. He had a close match in semis against a returning All-American. He did what he had to do to get a win. I was really happy in the finals. He opened up and kind of went after the guy. That is what we have been looking for from him. That is what we are expecting is him to open up and just get after people.
Anthony Bruno (125) and Donnie Bowden (174) both picked up fourth place finishes for the Wolves. Ian Muirhead (133) finished in seventh place.
Anthony and Donnie both came back and wrestled seven matches, Timm said. They were 5-2. I saw something out of those two I haven't seen all year, actually out of all three of them. I saw something different that was good. I was excited to finally see them get into what I believe how they can wrestle.
Bruno, who beat No. 1 ranked Connor McDonald of Newberry on Sunday, defeated fifth-ranked Brandon Davis of Ashland 6-4 in overtime to advance to the third place match. Bruno ended the match with a takedown with seven seconds left in the period to earn the victory. Davis defeated Bruno in the opening round of the tournament.
The Wolves are now off for the remainder of the 2011 calendar year and will return to action at the National Duals on Jan. 7-8 in Springfield, Ill.
We are excited to end the year of 2011 on a high note and to get ready to go into our National Duals in January at Springfield, Timm said. Hopefully it brings some confidence to our team.
