FAYETTE, Iowa - Emily Becken scored the last six points for Northern State - including a three-pointer at the buzzer - to help the NSU women's basketball team come back for a 72-69 win over Upper Iowa on Monday.
The junior point guard hit a contested three-pointer as time expired to give the Wolves the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference win.
The clock was running down and Becken got the shot off and knocked a big one down, Northern State women's basketball coach Curt Fredrickson said.
Becken also converted a three-point play to give NSU a 69-67 lead with 39 seconds left.
We needed something like that, Fredrickson said. We needed somebody to make a play like that to get us over the hump.
The Wolves were trying to get over the hump almost the entire game against the Peacocks. NSU, which trailed by as much as 14 points in the first half, was down 37-27 at halftime. NSU took its first lead in the second half when a Jenna Higgins free throw with 10 minutes left made the score 53-52. They hadn't been ahead since a 13-11 lead early in the first half.
It took a great second half on our part to come back and win the thing, Fredrickson said.
The score was tied on four occasions, the last tie was 62-all. The Wolves then scored four straight points to go ahead 66-62 with two minutes left. The Peacocks answered with five straight points to go ahead 67-66 with 55 seconds left. Becken then converted her three-point play with 39 seconds left. Upper Iowa's Carrie Thoma scored on an offensive rebound with 24 seconds left to tie the game at 69-all. The Wolves called a timeout with six seconds and then Becken hit the game-winning three-pointer.
The Wolves trailed by as much as 37-23 in the first half after bolting out to a 7-2 lead to start the game. Lana Otting powered the Peacocks with a game-high 23 points and Jeri Jacobson added 13 points off the bench. Upper Iowa drilled 11 three-pointers.
Jodi Reinschmidt led the Wolves with 18 points.
Jodi Reinschmidt had her steady game again, Fredrickson said. She did a good job of scoring for us.
Becken added 16 points. Mikayla Barondeau registered a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Krista Rabenberg registered 12 points, seven rebounds and six blocks.
