Those people who tread Broward County’s beaten nightlife paths are not likely to find Fort Lauderdale’s newest live music venue. Blink while driving past the Orange County Choppers facility and Gold Coast Roller Rink on Federal Highway near I-595 and you’ve already missed the Monterey Club.
The cozy lounge bills itself as a rockabilly bar, and the place attracts plenty of hot rods, cuffed jeans and pin-up tattoos on the arms of corseted girls who could themselves pass for pin-up models. But in its three-month existence, the Monterey Club has branched out beyond its stated identity to bring to its stage some of the tri-county area’s top bands in a range of genres.
Several Miami groups, such as indie-rock darlings Ex-Norwegian and the reverb-fueled Jacuzzi Boys, have played the venue. The stage also has hosted a mix of Broward and Palm Beach bands, including the punk group To Be Hated, country comedy act Boise Bob and His Backyard Band, high-energy rockers the Freakin’ Hott, the rockabilly outfit Hawg Jowls and the Bacon Fats and the indie rockers of A Hunter’s Pace. On Tuesday nights, DJ Sensitive Side spins punk, garage, indie and surf. Bands take the stage every Thursday, Friday and Saturday night.
The one-room lounge is more comfortable than most venues of its kind. Guests can play free pool on the red-topped table in one corner. Oversize red couches and beige armchairs surround coffee tables in three separate, living-room style areas. Animal-print rugs and decorative pillows set a racy tone, which is appropriate for a venue with its own burlesque troupe, the Reckless Dames.
The venue serves a small selection of red and white wines and keeps 35 bottled beers in stock, including craft beers from the likes of Dogfish Head, Flying Dog, Victory Brewing Company and Coney Island Lager.
Specials: The Monterey Club presents various weekend specials, including $10 Pabst Blue Ribbon buckets, as well as Kill the Cooler Wednesday and Ladies’ Night, which offers two-for-one drinks from 9 to 11 p.m. Thursdays.
