Social Security, veterans checks will go out Wed. as planned

Sun Sentinel

Tens of millions of checks to Social Security, veterans and other federal program recipients will go out Wednesday as planned without delay, U.S. Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart said Monday.

The Republican Congressman confirmed about 70 million checks will be processed after Congressional leaders reached an agreement on the debt ceiling Sunday evening.

"There is no risk at all,'' he said. "They're going out."

Jonathan Beeton, communications director for U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman-Schultz, D-Weston, also said Monday afternoon that the monthly payments should go out on time.

"Given the expected passage today of legislation that would extend the debt ceiling, we anticipate that there should be no delay in Social Security checks,'' he said.

Diaz-Balart said the government would have had the money to make the monthly payments even if the agreement hadn't been reached.

Calls and e-mails to the White House, the Social Security Administration and the Veterans Administration were not immediately returned Monday., 954-356-4205
