Katie Hillman and Allison Belanger are 2011 volleyball Players of the Year.
St. Thomas Aquinas junior
Position: Outside hitter
Stats: 294 kills, 163 service points, 155 digs, 80 aces, 14 blocks
Season highlights: After being sidelined her sophomore season with a knee injury, Belanger returned and was one of the Raiders' most consistent and powerful hitters. She had 20 kills in the Raiders¿ state semifinal loss to Martin County and another 18 kills in a regional semifinal against Nova. She also had 12 kills and 8 digs in the Raiders' regional championship win over Atlantic.
Comment: Belanger, a versatile 5-foot-9 scoring threat that can play both front and back row, has already received interest from several college programs including Florida State and the University of Chicago. She helped lead St. Thomas to a 20-win season and a berth in the state tournament.
Athlete's quote:"It was really hard to sit out because volleyball is my life, so I was excited to get back out there. It was the best feeling in the world. I just wanted to get better and add whatever I could to make the team better and get us as far as we could go."
Cardinal Gibbons senior
Position: Middle blocker, outside hitter
Stats: 341 kills, 180 digs, 164 service points, 112 blocks, 41 aces
Season highlights: As one of the Chiefs' top returning players, Hillman set out to be one of her team leaders and use her play to motivate her teammates. She helped lead Gibbons to a 24-2 record and state tournament berth. One of her biggest performances came in a win against St. Thomas Aquinas, when she registered 19 kills, 9 digs, and 8 blocks.
Comment: Hillman, one of Broward County¿s toughest hitters, is a Delaware signee. She was a first-team All-County selection as a junior.
Athlete's quote:"I think it was definitely a fun season, even though we didn't like the end. We were successful and we played pretty well. I'm going to miss [Cardinal Gibbons] and it was so sad when our season ended. That program impacted me a lot and I hope I impacted it, also."
