Things weren't very cheery for SMU in the 1980s, when the team was hit with what is commonly referred to as the death penalty by the NCAA after an investigation found 21 athletes being paid approximately $61,000 from boosters, Yahoo.com reports. Severe sanctions were imposed on the school for the 1987-88 seasons. Instead, the university eliminated the football program for two seasons.
