The high school football playoffs have finally arrived, but for Broward County, this week is also about the state swimming and diving and girls’ volleyball championships.
The first round of the football playoffs feature two first-time participants in Class 8A in Flanagan (9-1) and Monarch (8-2), who’ll make their debuts against a pair of undefeated teams in Deerfield Beach (10-0) and Miramar (10-0), respectively.
Blanche Ely, winners of four consecutive games and five of its past six, will host West Boca in 7A while Plantation will travel to Hialeah American and St. Thomas Aquinas will host Miami Springs. Should Plantation and St. Thomas win, they’d face off in a rematch of their regular-season matchup won by St. Thomas.
Dillard will host Miami Carol City in a 6A regional quarterfinal while American Heritage will host Naples Lely and Cardinal Gibbons will travel to Immokalee in 5A. Chaminade-Madonna, despite a 2-6 record, will travel to play Cardinal Newman (7-3) in the 3A playoffs while Pahokee will travel to Miami Westminster Christian. Glades Day hopes to make a deep 2A playoff run starting with Dade Christian.
Meanwhile, the state volleyball tournament will get underway Tuesday at Silver Spurs Arena in Kissimmee. St. Thomas Aquinas will play in the 7A semifinals Thursday and Sheridan Hills in the 2A semifinals Friday.
The 3A state swimming and diving championships will take place Friday in Stuart at Sailfish Splashpark Aquatic Athletics Center, with the swimming finals set for 5:30 p.m., and the 4A championships will be held Saturday.
