Sun Sentinel

Debbie Cavanaugh will never forget the 2013 YMCA Masters National Swimming Championship. The 55-year-old Cavanaugh, who coaches boys and girls swimming and diving, and water polo at Fort Lauderdale High, won the 100 and 200 backstroke, finished second in the 50 back and 200 breaststroke and third in the 50 breastroke in her age group (55-59) – and that was only the beginning.

Her 400 freestyle relay team set a YMCA national record at the meet held Thursday through Sunday at the Fort Lauderdale Aquatic Center.  She also received the meet’s John deBarbadillo Award for accomplishment, dedication and excellence in the advancement of YMCA Masters Swimming.

Her husband, Cav Cavanaugh, 77, also won big at the meet. He won the 50 butterfly, 50, 100 and 200 free and 100 individual medley in his age group (75-79). The Broward County YMCA finished third in the team standings.
