Wow factor: This cozy but impressively-organized store, whose acronym is ABC, is packed from floor to ceiling with secondhand clothes for children, sorted by gender, size and type of clothing — so you never have to dig. Parents can drop off their kids in a small play area and browse for toys, furniture and clothes for newborns to preteens at big discounts.
Background: After having a baby and closing her previous business, a title company, due to the worsening economy, owner Annette Caporella decided in August 2008 to try a more whimsical business model. She has expanded twice since opening the first store in Plantation, and now occupies a 3,000-square-foot space in Davie that she says holds more than 20,000 items.
"I'm an entrepreneur, and I think my background and our organization has led to our success," she says.
Her audience: The bulk is made up of parents looking to fill a nursery without breaking the bank.
"We serve a lot of foster parents, day-care centers, churches, grandparents, and mothers with multiple children," Caporella says, in addition to a host of traditional bargain-hunters.
Parents can consign items for extra money and avoid paying full price on items kids use only for a few months.
Editor's picks: Boys' plaid Tommy Hilfiger shirt ($9); burgundy-and-green party dress from Old Navy ($11); pink dance skirts ($6); Limited Too army-green cargo jacket ($9); Graco six-speed swing ($61); green-and-blue Vera Bradley diaper bag ($45); I Frogee diaper bag ($16), Madeleine DVDs ($7).
Playing dress-up: ABC carries off-season items that might be difficult to find in other stores, such as children's snow pants ($15-$20). There also are Halloween costumes throughout the year, featuring characters such as Tinker Bell ($26) and Winnie the Pooh ($10).
The process: The store only accepts items for consignment at certain times, so call ahead and know your season.
