We in the media business like to think that we have an idea of what will happen this fall when college football finally kicks off, but truth be told, our bubble is one injury or upset away from being popped.
But it's fun to try to predict the future, and it gives everyone something to talk about during the football-free summer. If a prognostication can keep college football fans from incessantly tweeting at recruits, then it's worth the future embarrassment to me. (Seriously though, stop tweeting at recruits, it's an NCAA violation.)
So if you'll join me in taking a look at Jerry Palm's reprehensibly early bowl projections for the 2013 season, I think there are a few things that we can talk about.
First off, Conference USA has five direct bowl tie-ins, which is three more than the Sun Belt has. That's another one of the perks of moving up a league.
Palm does not project FAU to be bowl eligible in 2013, but again the projections are early. Any team that wins six games and is .500 or better is automatically eligible to play in a bowl game, you might recall that the Sun Belt stole some C-USA tie-ins last year because too few teams from C-USA qualified.
According to Palm, La. Tech, Rice, Marshall, ECU and Tulsa should get excited.
New Orleans Sun Belt champion vs. C-USA: La.-Lafayette vs. La. Tech
Hawaii MountainWest vs. C-USA: Utah State vs. Rice
Beef O'Brady's AAC vs. C-USA: Houston vs. Marshall
Heart of Dallas Big Ten vs. C-USA: Minnesota vs. East Carolina
Liberty C-USA Champion vs. SEC: Tulsa vs. Miss. State
